Funding Opportunities for Outdoor Recreation Projects

Outdoor recreation provides a myriad of benefits. Improved health and happiness, enhanced socialization and productivity and increased environmental awareness enrich the well-being of people’s lives. And now, more than ever, quality outdoor recreational opportunities are important.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources is dedicated to supporting the development and enhancement of public recreation facilities.  Requests for the Clean Ohio Trails Fund, Recreational Trails Program and the NatureWorks program are due soon!

Clean Ohio Trails Fund (COTF) requests are due March 15, 2021.

The Clean Ohio Trails Fund works to improve outdoor recreational opportunities for Ohioans by funding trails for outdoor pursuits of all kinds. Eligible projects include: Land acquisition for a trail, trail development, trailhead facilities, engineering and design. Projects should be consistent with the statewide trail plan and provide for the linkage of population centers with outdoor recreation areas and facilities; preserve natural corridors; or provide links in urban areas to support commuter access. COTF can provide up to 75% in grant funds (maximum grant award is $500,000). Local match required is at least 25% of the total project cost.

Recreational Trails Program (RTP) requests are due March 15, 2021.

This program is open to all local governments, park and joint recreation districts and non-profit organizations for the development of new trails, trail facilities and the maintenance or restoration of existing trails. Projects that improve access for people with disabilities as well environment and safety education programs related to trails are also eligible activities. ODNR can provide up to 80% in grant funds (maximum grant award is $150,000). The 20% local match may include labor or materials. This trails program will fund the development of loop trails within a park.

NatureWorks requests are due June 1, 2021.

The NatureWorks grant program provides up to 75% reimbursement assistance for local government subdivisions for the acquisition, development and rehabilitation of public park and recreation areas.

Eligible projects can range from picnic facilities to playgrounds, and sports fields to splash pads. This program can fund a wide variety of recreational opportunities! Funding allocations are determined on a county-by-county basis. Specific allocations announcements are expected soon. Applications may request the full county allocation up to $150,000 if available. Local matching funds may be cash, material donations or in kind.
