Achieving Community Engagement During a Pandemic
PDG used innovative planning practices during a resident-driven, community-wide visioning project in Worthington, Ohio, a northern suburb of Columbus just north of OSU’s main campus in Franklin County-Ohio. The planning process began in the fall of 2019 and was completed in December 2020. The in-person public input process, however, was taken on-line in March 2020 due to Covid-19. A public input plan and a communications plan were created and modified. The goal of engaging 80% of the resident population was achieved utilizing various internet tools, platforms, and community-wide mailings.
The planning process had to be flexible, altering the scope of services by changing the in-person public outreach activities to virtual platforms. The project also had to abide by the various public health safety precautions and mandates. Despite all these challenges, the project was still successful due to the commitment and cooperation of the resident committee, members of the public, city council, city administration, and consultants.
